What is AMI?
Dr. Maria Montessori founded an association to protect her pedagogy.
Why AMI?
An AMI trainer has to teach exactly what Dr. Montessori stipulated in her statutes and how
she wanted it, in order to realize her ideas in work with children. If all the requirements of AMI are met, the AMI diploma is awarded.
The AMI course for the developmental age of 3 to 6 years, also known as the kindergarten course, is led and conducted by Ms. Maria Schäf.
Target Group
- Those interested in working with children age 3-6 years and seeking a professional education and further studies in pedagogy and want to aquire the Association Montessori Internationale Diploma.
- Those interested in pedagogical, psychological, therapeutic or medical training.
- Those interested in studying Montessori pedagogy.
Course Language
The course is taught in German and English.
Examination
The final examination is divided into a written and an oral final examination.
The examining board is chaired by the examiner, who is appointed by AMI. The remaining examiners and exam assistants are appointed by the course instructor in consultation with AMI.
Certification Requirements
- Minimum of 90% course attendance
- Successful completion of written submissions: theory, material books, Hospitationsbericht
- Proof of the required hours of supervised practice (min. 140 hours), observation (90 hours) and teaching practice (80 hours). Place and time must be organized independently by the course participant in consultation with the AMI trainer.

AMI diploma course completion
After passing the written and oral examinations, as well as fulfilling the other AMI requirements, the student will receive an AMI diploma for the ages of 3 – 6 years.
The diploma awarded by AMI confirms that the holder “has studied the principles and practical application of Montessori education for the concerned age group and has passed the written and oral examinations.” This diploma entitles the holder to run a Montessori kindergarten group according to the principles of Maria Montessori worldwide. Note, however, that various national/state requirements may also apply. In addition, AMI is entitled to supplement its state professional title with: “AMI Diploma holder” (with AMI diploma).
The diploma entitles the holder to participate in all international AMI events and its affiliated organizations in Germany and abroad. This course forms the basis for the AMI Teacher Course „6-12 years“. This diploma does not authorize the holder in the training of others in Montessori education.
